Normandie Ridge Resident Celebrates 100th Birthday

September 15, 2006
Ethel Miller, a resident of the Nursing Care Center at Normandie Ridge Senior Living Community, celebrated her 100th birthday today with a party, which was attended by family, friends, staff, and a number of residents.
Ethel is originally from Southwest York, PA where she grew up with her parents, two sisters, and three brothers. She is the eldest sibling.
Mrs. Miller went to college for two years to become a school teacher. She taught all grades for three years at a small country school. After she was married and built a house in Hallam, PA with her husband, she taught grades four through six for eight years. Some of her old students still keep in touch with her.
From there, Ethel began working at the York County Courthouse where she kept the court records and did other clerical work. It was a very strenuous job, and she often had to work two hours of overtime to make sure all of the work for the next day was completed. After 26 years at the Courthouse, Ethel retired in 1966.
She stayed at home with her husband until he passed away and could not live alone any longer, which was when she came to live at Normandie Ridge. They were not blessed with any children.
Over the years, Ethel has enjoyed reading and planning picnics and other small events on activity committees. She is a member of the Lutheran church congregation.
