Normandie Ridge Residents Assist Needy Children in York County

January 10 , 2007
For the past three years, the residents and staff of Normandie Ridge Senior Living Community have been donating winter clothing items for children, such as hats, mittens, and scarves, to the Bell Family Shelter of York to be distributed to local children in need. This year, about 100 items were collected and delivered to Bell on December 15.
To gather these items, a Christmas tree was displayed in The Patriot Café, giving all residents, staff, and visitors an opportunity to hang hats, mittens, or scarves on the tree. The donations were distributed by the Bell Family Shelter to homeless families living in their transitional housing units.
Bell Family Shelter, funded partially by federal, state, and local government programs also relies heavily on the community for a significant portion of its operating budget, and is
York County’s only 30-day emergency shelter for homeless families. The Shelter is a program of Bell Socialization Services in York, which is an agency that supplies quality mental health and mental retardation services. Last year alone, 328 family units with 700 family members were served by the Bell Family Shelter. These families are provided with food, clothing, shelter, and a family caseworker who helps them find housing, employment, and other needed services. Over 80 percent of all families served by Bell secure housing and do not return.
“Our clients benefit greatly from these donations, and we’re glad to have Normandie Ridge as one of our participants,” said Arlette Figdore, Director of Community Relations and Development, Bell Socialization Services.
