Normandie Ridge Senior Living Community will be hosting a Breakfast Series presentation on the topic of Senior Crime Prevention from 9-10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 5 in the facility’s Multi-Purpose Room at 1700 Normandie Drive in York. The lecture, given by Joyce O’Brien, Community Liaison Coordinator for the Public Protection Division in the Office of Attorney, Tom Corbett, will conclude her talk with a question and answer session. Every year, across Pennsylvania and the United States, senior citizens fall victim to many kinds of consumer fraud, especially home improvement, telemarketing, foreign lottery, and sweepstakes scams. With 2.5 million residents over the age of 60 and the third highest percentage of senior citizens in the nation, Pennsylvania is a desirable place for con-artists. With that in mind, the Attorney General expanded efforts to educate more seniors on how to better protect themselves against fraud through his Senior Crime Prevention University program.
Joyce O’Brien coordinates and conducts seminars across Pennsylvania about various types of fraud, scams, and other ploys used by con-artists who often target the senior population. Ms. O’Brien’s work with seniors expands over 30 years in three states, including her appointment by former Governor Tom Ridge as the State Ombudsman in the Pennsylvania Department of Aging and her work as an aide to the President Pro Tempore of the State Senate regarding senior issues and legislation.
