What’s New at Normandie Ridge

Senior Eye Care Breakfast Series Presentation Scheduled for Normandie Ridge

March 5, 2008

As March is “Save Your Vision” month, Dr. William E. Schwab, an Optometrist with Apple Hill Eye Center, will be speaking at Normandie Ridge Senior Living Community’s Breakfast Series from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 25 in the facility’s Multi-Purpose Room at 1700 Normandie Drive in York.  Dr. Schwab will discuss the importance of maintaining general eye health and “what’s new” in the treatment of eye diseases.  Topics covered in his lecture will include dry eye syndrome, cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration, as well as general medical problems than can affect the eyes, such as diabetes, hypertension, and arthritis.  These diseases and their affects on our eyes and vision will be explained and treatments discussed.  His talk will conclude with a question and answer session.  All are invited to attend free of charge, and breakfast items will be available for all participants.  Registration is required by March 23 by calling Joyce Singer at (717) 718-0937.

Dr. Schwab comes from a family with a rich history in the field of Optometry.  Starting in the mid 1930’s, his uncle, Dr. Lyle Cruse, opened an Optometric practice in York.  He hired Dr. Schwab’s father, William Schwab, who eventually opened his own office in downtown York in 1948.  In 1970, the senior William Schwab opened a second office in Each York, which remains open today under the ownership and direction of his sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Sam Corwell.  Dr. Schwab’s uncle, Dr. Cruse, went on to have a successful optometric practice, and both of his sons became Optometrists (Drs. Dave and Steve Cruse), practicing with their father in North York until his retirement.  Dr. Steve Cruse continues to practice in York County.

Breakfast Series presenter, Dr. William E. Schwab, began working in his father’s office as a teen.  After graduating from the PA College of Optometry in 1993, Dr. Schwab took over a long established practice in Chambersburg, PA and practiced there until May of 2007.

If you’d like to make a suggestion on a future Breakfast Series topic, please call Heather Ervin at (570) 522-3859.
