RiverWoods Residents Take Trip to Corning Museum of Glass

Bill Sandmeyer

November 10, 2006

On October 5, a combination of forty-three RiverWoods residents and local community members took a day-long bus trip to the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY.

The day started off with two hands-on studio workshops entitled Fun with Glass that gave demonstrations on glass blowing ornaments.  When the workshops were complete, the professionals let the residents and community members try the process for themselves.  They were able to choose the colors and shapes of their ornaments.

At the next studio, sun catchers were demonstrated and made in various shapes and sizes of colored glass.  Everyone had lunch and enjoyed an afternoon guided tour of the Explore the Glass Collection, Innovation Center, and Sculpture Gallery.  A Hot Glass demonstration and show ended the day.  All of the pieces created by the residents and guests were put in a kiln overnight and late shipped to RiverWoods, where they were displayed in the entrance of the café for all to see.

The cost of this trip was a flat rate of $62 for anyone who wanted to attend.  Although this was the first bus trip to the Corning Museum of Glass, about five other bus trips have been planned and executed, including a trip to Niagara Falls, lunch boat tours, and Longwood Gardens.
