County Fair at RiverWoods Replaces Bloomsburg Fair for Nursing Residents

November 15, 2006

On September 25, RiverWoods Senior Living Community held a County Fair Day for the Nursing Care Center residents on Evergreen Lane from approximately 10:15 a.m. until 11:45 a.m.  About 36 residents participated.

RiverWoods wasn’t able to transport all of the Nursing residents to the Bloomsburg Fair, that took place the same week, so Nancy Wise, Recreation Assistant, planned a County Fair Day so the residents could experience some of the same things they would at the fair in Bloomsburg.

“Our Friends,” was the entertainment group for the morning, performing sing-a-longs (including old time favorites), playing games, and conducting different demonstrations.  Featured were a wagon of fresh vegetables, quilts and embroidered items, a live rabbit named “Strawberry,” a homemade square dancing dress with bonnet, home canned items,  Items were taken to each resident to hold and discuss “Waldo the Wonderful Wizard” who told futures with his crystal ball, a cake trivia game, “Pick a Duck” game, and “Ball in the Basket” game.  Prizes such as necklaces, helium balloons, wind up teeth, and neck ties were awarded to all residents.

Nancy and volunteer Sandy Black served black raspberry ice cream to the residents for dessert.  Her mother is a resident in RiverWoods Nursing Care Center.

All of the residents had a wonderful time; some even helped Nancy decorate for the event.

The members of “Our Friends” are from the Lewisburg/New Columbia area and include: Danny Neitz (“Waldo the Wonderful Wizard”) and his wife, Carolyn, who played the piano; Harry and Gloria Yerg; Clarence and Joyce Snyder; and Norma and Jim Catherman.    Interestingly enough, the four ladies in the group are sisters.  “Our Friends” comes to the Nursing Care Center on Evergreen Lane often to perform sing-a-longs and participate in special events.

All departments worked together to make “County Fair Day” a memorable fun day for our residents.
