Save a Life - Donate Blood at RiverWoods Senior Living Community

November 21, 2006

RiverWoods Senior Living Community hosts approximately four blood drives every year on their campus at 3201 River Road in Lewisburg.  The next drive will be held on Friday, December 1 from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m.

The Senior Living Community’s first blood drive was held on January 29, 2003 and collected 55 units of blood.  Since then, there has been 13 more blood drives and have gathered a total of 548 whole blood units and 54 red cell units from RiverWoods, Albright Care Services (ACS) staff, and the community.  That’s a grand total of 602 units of blood that has been donated since 2003!

Blood drives are coordinated by Michelle Houtz, Administrative Assistant at RiverWoods, through the Union County Chapter of the American Red Cross and their Blood Services Coordinator, Nancy Libbey.  Nancy also welcomes any questions the public may have regarding blood donation.  The Red Cross Center advertises upcoming drives on the radio and in the newspaper, and Michelle hands out pamphlets to all ACS and RiverWoods staff in addition to posting flyers around the campus.

The RiverWoods dietary staff, headed by Almeda Brantlinger and Kathy Whitenight, supply delicious snacks and refreshments to all participants.

“Our most successful drive was on September 10, 2003 where we accumulated 56 units of blood,” Michelle commented.  “We usually average 43 donations at each drive, however.”

Anyone interested in signing up for the December 1 blood drive at RiverWoods Senior Living Community may contact Michelle Houtz at (570) 522-1922 or by email at Michelle.Houtz@albrightcare.org.
