Bucknell University Fraternity Sponsors Winterfest for RiverWoods Nursing Residents

Gingerbread houses built by residents

December 8, 2006

The Nursing Care Center residents of RiverWoods Senior Living Community began celebrating the holiday season early this year when thirteen students from Chi Phi, a Bucknell University fraternity, sponsored Winterfest in Marlow Hall at 10:30 a.m. on December 2.  As part of the event, nineteen of the residents enjoyed musical entertainment, apple cider, and building gingerbread houses.

To kick off the activity, several musically inclined members of Chi Phi formed a jazz trio and played Christmas songs.  Afterwards, each of the residents assembled gingerbread houses, with the help of the students, and sipped apple cider.  As part of the fraternity’s budget, the students purchased the all of the materials needed for the craft along with the cider that was served.

James Nelson, Community Service Chair for the fraternity, is responsible for going out and looking for volunteer opportunities for Chi Phi.  Winterfest was part of their community service program and was geared towards spending more one-on-one time with the residents.

“RiverWoods was a natural choice for our project since we had played bingo with the residents last spring and had a great time,” James said.

The residents always love spending time with the students, especially when they put on such a nice event for them, as did the Bucknell students.

“We thought the event was a success,” James commented.  “It’s for a good cause, and I hope we’ll be back to volunteer at RiverWoods in the near future.”
