Writing Circle Celebrates 14th Anniversary
February 13, 2007
The Beaver Memorial United Methodist Church Writing Circle will be celebrating its 14th anniversary this April. Founded in 1993 by Lewisburg resident Lois Huffines, the Writing Circle started meeting in the Creative Arts Room at RiverWoods Senior Living Community about four years ago when many of its members moved to RiverWoods. It consists of nearly 20 writers, including RiverWoods residents and Beaver Memorial members that attend meetings on a regular basis. The group gathers on Sunday evenings, usually once a month.
Short essays; poetry; anecdotes about family, friends, and experiences; memories of loved ones; family histories; and perennial spiritual issues are examples of some of the different types of writing prepared by the group, whose purpose is to explore issues of spirituality through writing.
“Writing leads us to insights and connections that we might not have achieved if we had not been writing,” Lois commented on the importance of the Circle.
In the Writing Circle, the members’ innermost thoughts, feelings, doubts, questions, and fears are exposed. Trust and confidence are a big part of keeping the group together and making the members feel comfortable in sharing their stories. When appropriate, the writing is published in the Beaver Memorial Church Newsletter.
“The search for words is rewarding in itself; the results may not always be elegant, but they might just show a glimpse of who we are and what we believe,” Lois noted.
