Slifer House
Barbara Floyd to Lecture at Slifer House
September 6, 2007
In its continuing series of lectures concerning Murder, Mayhem and Medicine, Slifer House Museum will be hosting Barbara Floyd from the University of Toledo, OH, at its next meeting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 15. Tickets are $6.00 per person, and season ticket holders will be given preferential seating.
Barbara Floyd is an archivist at the University and has made a study of 19th century patent medicines and medicine developments, including phrenology (the study of the bumps on someone’s head), electrotherapy, and hydropathy. Modern medical practices including the study of bacteriology arose after the Civil War.
Ms. Floyd’s talk is sixth in a series of lectures held in conjunction with a small exhibit at the museum highlighting significant events in the Susquehanna Valley, including Native American vs. white settler conflicts; duels; counterfeiting; bootlegging; the spiritualism movement in the 19th century, which utilized table rappings; automatic rappings; Ouija boards to contact the ‘other side’; and advances in medicine including the development of mineral springs and patent medicines. The exhibit continues through the end of October. The exhibit and the lecture series are graciously underwritten by a grant from the Union County Tourism Fund. For information on additional overnight accommodations, contact the Susquehanna Valley Visitor’s Bureau at 800-525-7320 or visitcentralpa.org.
