Clarissa Dillon to Lecture at Slifer House

August 14 , 2007

In its continuing series of lectures concerning Murder, Mayhem and Medicine, Slifer House Museum will be hosting Clarissa Dillon, Ph.D, at its next meeting, Saturday, August 18 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $6.00 per person. Season ticket holders will be given preferential seating.

Ms. Dillon will be lecturing on colonial medicinal cures and debunking the myth that medicinal cures were all derived from herbs. The colonials utilized derivatives from animals, vegetables and minerals in curing their sick and wounded.

Ms. Dillon is eminently qualified for presenting this lecture, having earned her PhD at Bryn Mawr College for her research on 18th century kitchen gardens in southeastern Pennsylvania. She has been participating in living history activities since 1973, blending women’s studies, 18th century life, and ingredients in colonial medicine.

Ms. Dillon’s talk is fifth in a series of lectures held in conjunction with a small exhibit at the Museum highlighting significant events in the Susquehanna Valley including Native American vs. white settler conflicts, duels, counterfeiting, bootlegging, the spiritualism movement in the 19th century which utilized table rappings, automatic rappings, and ouija boards to contact the ‘other side’, and advances in medicine including the development of mineral springs and patent medicines. The exhibit continues through the end of October. The exhibit and the lecture series are graciously underwritten by a grant from the Union County Commissioners Tourism Fund. For information on additional overnight accommodations, contact the Susquehanna Valley Visitors’ Bureau at 800.525.7320 or visitcentralpa.org.

Slifer House Museum is the former home of Colonel Eli Slifer, who served as both Treasurer (1850’s) and Secretary (during the Civil War) of Pennsylvania. His home is the design of Philadelphia architect Samuel Sloan. The museum interior is carefully recreated to evoke the life and times of the Victorian period. It is situated on the campus of RiverWoods, a senior living community, and is owned and operated by Albright Care Services. The museum is open for tours, Tuesdays through Sundays, 1-4PM.
