Slifer House Museum to Sponsor Flag Day Lecture
May 25, 2007
In honor of Flag Day, the Slifer House Museum will be holding a lecture outlining the fascinating history of the United States flag. Twenty-six flags have preceded the current 50-starred Stars and Stripes. Rudy Mummey will be presenting this informative lecture on Thursday, June 14 at 6 p.m. Weather permitting, the presentation will be made from the front porch of the Museum, located at 80 Magnolia Drive in Lewisburg.
Mummey has been a flag collector since he was in the 6th Grade, but it was not until his retirement from teaching that he “continued his interest in earnest… I have researched and purchased approximately 400+ flags, including those of the Revolutionary War era, the Civil War era, all 27 of the official US flags, all the state flags, and the Canadian province flags.” Mummey is a member of the North American Vexillological Association (NAVA). In this year’s Fourth of July parade in Lewisburg, Scout and Little League groups will carry Mummey’s collection of official U.S. flags.
Guests are invited to remain for the summer concert following at 7 pm, which features local favorite K. J. Reimensnyder-Wagner. In the case of inclement weather, both events will be held at Marlow Hall, located within the Nursing Care Center on the campus of RiverWoods Senior Living Community at 3201 River Road in Lewisburg.
