March 6, 2008

Jim Getty

The Slifer House Museum is pleased to announce a presidential visit on Saturday, March 29. Guests will have the rare opportunity of dining with President Abraham Lincoln within the elegant dining room of Slifer House. President Lincoln will be the honored guest along with sixteen distinguished citizens of the United States, who will be able to converse intimately with the 16th president. A seven course meal, a menu with a hint of spring in the air, will be enjoyed by the attendees. After dinner music, a selection of melodies from the Civil War, will be performed by soprano, Ruth Blankenship; baritone, Matt Poremsky; and pianist, Judith Blee. Miss Betty Cook will serve as hostess of the event. A Presidential Honor Guard will be present. Cost is $125 per person, a portion of which is tax-deductible as a charitable donation to the Museum. Seating is limited to sixteen guests.

Well-known for his performances as the 16th president of the United States, Jim Getty maintains a theatre in Gettysburg year-round. He travels thousands of miles every year, performing before children, historical societies, and reenactment groups. Getty performs an unforgettable monologue, recounting the life of the great statesman.

The Slifer House Museum is a grand Victorian mansion built by Eli Slifer as a ‘country estate’ for him and his family. With initial success as a manufacturer, Eli Slifer later achieved prominence as a politician, ultimately serving as the Secretary of Pennsylvania during the Civil War. Designed by Philadelphia architect Samuel Sloan in 1860, the house cost $8,000 to complete. When finished, it was featured in the October 1862 edition of Godey’s Lady’s Book. The house later served as the Evangelical Home for the Aged, providing the historical cornerstone of Evangelical Community Hospital and RiverWoods Senior Living Community. The museum, owned and operated by Albright Care Services, is open for tours Tuesdays through Fridays from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. or by appointment.

Your check or money order may be mailed to: Slifer House Museum, 80 Magnolia Drive, Lewisburg, PA. 17837. For further information, please call (570) 524-2245.
