Slifer House Museum Announces Spring Exhibit
January 12 , 2007
A bevy of rogues and rascals, charlatans and scoundrels will make their appearances at the Slifer House Museum in Lewisburg in Spring 2007. Not as visitors, but as part of an exhibit entitled, Murder, Mystery and Mayhem. The exhibit will open Saturday, 14 April and continue through the end of October. The exhibit will explore subjects as diverse as murder, kidnappings, phrenology (the study of bumps on top of one’s head), table rapping, and scandals of the 19th century. The exhibit will be accompanied by a lecture series.
One of the lecture speakers will be Alan Irvine, an instructor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Pittsburgh. Irvine will be speaking on the ‘Rogues and Rascals of Pennsylvania’. Dr. Irvine is also a professional storyteller and has been researching stories of Pennsylvania history since 1992. He has presented his stories at the Three Rivers Storytelling Festival, the National Road Festival, the Whiskey Rebellion Bicentennial, and at many museums, historical societies, and schools. His presentation on Saturday, 21 July is a program sponsored by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities and its We the People initiative. The PHC inspires people to come together and share a life of learning. Since 1973, the PHC has provided resources that empower local groups to help their communities explore history, literature, the arts, and the ideas that shape the human experience
Barbara Floyd, the Director of the Ward M. Canaday Center for Special Collections at the University of Toledo, will be speaking on Saturday, 15 September, 2007. Ms. Floyd’s lecture is entitled, “From Quackery to Bacteriology”, a study of medicinal cures and potions, elixirs and cure-alls foisted on the American public during the 19th century.
These are two exciting lectures you will not want to miss! At this writing, the four other lectures are still being formalized.
Season tickets will be available in March and will cost $30 per person. Season ticket holders will receive preferred seating at the lectures. For further information regarding the exhibit or lectures, please call (570) 524-2245.
