Donald R. (Don) Snyder, of Mazeppa, was honored as the Slifer House Museum Volunteer of the Year at a luncheon held at the Museum on Saturday, September 22. During 2006, Don accumulated 144 hours, 45 minutes of volunteer hours. Snyder has been honored twice before - 2002 and 2006, for his hours of service in 2001 and 2005 respectively.

Snyder is responsible for implementing the ‘hands on’ experience enjoyed by schoolchildren in which they participate in 19th century chores and games and ‘take tea’ in clothing representative of the Victorian Era. The ‘Virtual Reality’ tour, as it is called, has recently been expanded to a week-long Summer History Camp. Don was presented with a miniature porch rocker, symbolic of his dedication in maintaining the cleanliness of the Slifer House porch and his great care of the Boston ferns which grace the front porch of the museum.

The Museum’s Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Doris and Dave Reed, instrumental in saving the house from demolition, refurbishing it, and opening it as a museum in July 1976. The Reeds were unable to attend, however, Doris wrote the following, “Oh, how we wish we could attend the Volunteer luncheon… We are very surprised and overwhelmed that you would consider us as recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award. Many others helped along the way and we were but a small part of the beginning.  The work of the many volunteers…has nourished the museum year by year, and it has grown beyond our greatest dreams. We appreciate receiving your excellent newsletter and relish each acquisition and program… The little acorn planted in 1974 has grown into a MIGHTY OAK! May its branches ever spread! We are North Carolinians now but Lewisburg, Pennsylvania and especially Slifer House, will forever be in our hearts. Thank you so much for thinking of us!”

Acting as Master of Ceremonies, Museum Director Gary Parks offered the Top Ten Reasons for Volunteering at Slifer House, i.e., the ten people with the most hours. They include: Snyder; Jan Bender, of Lewisburg, 101 hours, 15 minutes; Theda Brinker, of Lewisburg, 81 hours, 30 minutes; Clara Ellen Kemmerer, of Lewisburg, 62 hours, 15 minutes; Janet Tingwall, of Milton, 59 hours; Judy Blee, of Lewisburg, 55 hours, 30 minutes; Marjorie Walker, of Lewisburg, 50 hours, 15 minutes; Christopher Kehoe, of Lewisburg, 50 hours; Ruth Kaufman, of Lewisburg, 43 hours, 45 minutes; and Sally Lauer, of Selinsgrove, 36 hours, 30 minutes.

As Immediate Past Chairman of the Advisory Board, Grace Mahon added her thanks to the forty-six attendees at the luncheon. The attendees represented the Advisory Board, tour guides, the Victorian Literature Reading Club, the Collections Committee, the Abraham Lincoln programming committees, the Holiday House Tour Committee, and the Rummage Sale workers.
